Level One: Level one rock climbing is our introductory climbing course. The day will begin by learning basic climbing techniques and terminology, such as edging, smearing, jamming and mantling. Next we will go over the type, use and care of the equipment that we will be using. Following this we will learn some basic knots that will allow us to tie into the rope and anchor systems. Ground school will consist of learning the technique of belaying. A number of different methods will be used. The second half of the day will be spent applying the skills learned in the morning to the rock faces. Using belayed top-ropes we will be able to make climbs that we would not be able to do without the safety of the rope. Finally we will learn how to descend difficult terrain by using a technique known as rappelling. Offered daily or as part of a three or four day progression, October though April.
Level Two: Level two is a continuation of level one. The first part of the morning will be spent reviewing knots and belaying procedures. Once we become proficient with these skills we will learn how to set anchors for top-rope situations. Using the top-ropes we will work on refining our climbing techniques on a variety of climbing routes. As the day comes to an end we will do more rappelling and a demonstrattion of lead climbing. Offered as part of a four day progression or on a daily basis, October through April.
Advanced: The advanced rock climbing course is for those that have become proficient in anchoring systems for top-ropes. The prospective participant should be comfortable in all aspects of top-rope climbing and rappelling. Because of the advanced nature of the course we keep the instructor to student ratio at one to two maximum. The course will concentrate on making the transition from top-rope climbing to lead climbing. The principles of leading and belaying a lead climber and protection placement as it applies to lead climbing will be covered. Once we feel comfortable with our new knowledge, climbs will be lead by the instructor and then followed by the student. From this point we can work more on leading or move on to multi-pitch climbing depending on the desires of the individuals. Offered as part of a four day progression or on a daily basis October through April.
Courses are offered on demand with advance reservations required.
